Our Story
West Side Cats first opened its doors in 2008. We are a non-profit, no-kill rescue and adoption facility in Youngstown, Ohio, founded by individuals who didn't want to volunteer for kill shelters any longer. We outgrew our first location, moved to a larger facility in 2010, and most recently transitioned into our current location in 2018. With the exception of those being cared for in our clinic, all kitties await adoption in colorful, open rooms with plenty of beds and toys. Our shelter has several climbing trees, including a huge wooden tree custom made for us. Although we primarily serve Mahoning and Trumbull Counties, people have come from other states to adopt our kitties. Every year we place between 300–600 cats and kittens up for adoption.
Some of our kitties are shy and/or not comfortable with young children. We therefore do not permit kids under the age of 10 in our areas where the cats and kittens are located. We do not want them to be stressed. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

THE AFTER HOURS SHY KITTY KREW
🥹💝 Shy and bashful kitties at West Side Cats tend to feel more comfortable and less timid after the shelter closes and it’s not so noisy and busy. The volunteers for the Shy Kitty Krew are available Tuesdays, 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm by appointment for one on one time with them. Please contact Sheri at 330-881-6672 to schedule. Applications for our shy kitties can be taken at this time. These kitties are also available to visit during our normal shelter hours. Valentine's Day Cupcake/Pizza Raffle 2025
West Side Cats is having a fun Valentine’s Day fundraiser! Ellen…our friend and neighbor down the street at Sweet Grace Anna's Fancy Cakes and Bakes is going to generously MAKE and DONATE 4 yummy heart cupcake cakes for us to raffle off! Also this year…friends at Marco’s Pizza location 4381 Kirk Rd. in Youngstown, OH 44511 are generously donating 3 gift certificates for 3 LARGE 2-topping heart-shaped pizzas!!
We would LOVE to show our shelter kitties some LOVE on Valentine’s Day… so for a $5 donation, we will put your name on one of our kitty’s heart decorations hanging in the shelter AND you get a ticket entry to try to win 1 of the 4 cupcake heart cakes or 1 of the 3 heart shaped pizzas!!!
You can buy as many tickets as you would like and we will fill your ticket entries out for you! The last day to purchase tickets is Monday, February 10th and the drawing will be Tuesday February 11th at 6pm. There will be 7 tickets pulled and you will need to pick up your cupcake cake at Sweet Grace Anna’s Fancy Cakes and Bakes located at 4927 Market St. Unit 4 in Boardman, OH 44512 and your Gift Certificate for the pizzas can be picked up at the shelter!
All of the money raised will go towards the vetting and medical needs of the kitties at West Side Cats!
We have approximately 50 hearts with the kitties names on them hanging on all of the walls throughout the shelter, and we would LOVE to see at least one name on each of our kitties’ hearts! THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT!

NEW SHELTER HOURS
West Side Cats is adjusting their hours on Wednesdays and Fridays to 2:00pm-5:00pm. The hours for Monday, Tuesday & Thursday will remain the same 4:00pm-6:00pm.
West Side Cats open hours effective immediately are as follows:
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays: 4:00pm-6:00pm
Wednesdays and Fridays: 2:00pm-5:00pm
The shelter is NOT open to the public on the weekends.
